At New Moon we care deeply about circus. We believe in its value to our physical and mental well-being, and its importance as an art form and creative outlet. We also recognize that there are barriers to access that impact some individuals more than others. In an effort to help expand access to circus, New Moon has established a self-funded scholarship program.

While we acknowledge that we can’t assist everyone, we have identified 3 areas of need that we can address through our program.

BIPOC Scholarships. We recognize that the persistent inequities pervasive in American society have made access to circus training inherently difficult for members of historically marginalized groups, particularly Black, Indigenous, People of Color. The scholarships we offer to people identifying as BIPOC aim to help diversify circus by removing the financial barrier to entry and encouraging participation from BIPOC individuals. Applicants for these scholarships must identify as BIPOC, must reside in the greater Seattle area, and must have taken at least 1 aerial class (a single ABC class counts).

Limited Income Young Adult Scholarships. The emergence into early adulthood is often marked by financial challenges in the form of education, apprenticeships, and low-paying entry-level jobs. Our Limited Income Young Adult scholarships aim to offer an opportunity to those young adults for whom circus classes would otherwise be unattainable. Applicants for these scholarships must reside in the greater Seattle area, must be aged 18 – 28 years, must have taken at least 1 aerial class (a single ABC class counts), and must attest that their current financial picture is prohibitive to circus training.

Youth Scholarships. Families have a lot of their plates, and children come with a lot of expenses. We recognize that meeting a child’s basic needs while also providing them opportunities for exploration and creative growth can be a challenge. Our Youth scholarships hope to ease that burden and help more youth experience circus. Applicants for these scholarships must be aged 11 – 17 years and must reside in the greater Seattle area.

All New Moon scholarships have a 1-year term and can be renewed once, for a total of 2 years of support. Adult scholarship terms run January – December and applications are accepted October 1st – November 30th. Youth scholarships run September – June and applications are accepted March 1st – April 30th. Scholarships support 1 weekly class per session. Adult scholarships also include an open studio membership. Scholarship recipients are expected to attend class weekly. Absences must be communicated ahead of time. More than 2 absences in a session jeopardizes a recipient’s continued support.
